As residents of Billings and the surrounding communities, we know how lucky we are to have such a scenic fall. Between the changing leaves, active wildlife, and beautiful frosty mornings, not much beats autumn in Montana. These simple tips can keep you safe on the road this fall.
It’s hard to beat a beautiful view of autumn in Montana, complete with falling leaves of every color. Just remember that the leaves on the road could be hiding traffic lines and crosswalks, so you’ll need to pay extra attention to your driving. Leaves can also be incredibly slippery, making sudden stops risky. If you’re driving on one of the area’s gorgeous tree-filled roads, go slow in case you need to brake quickly.
On mornings when you wake up to see a layer of frost covering the ground, remember to leave a few minutes early for your morning commute. Frost on the road can be slick, especially on bridges and overpasses. And the moisture from the frost can remain on the road in shaded areas.
Fall is the prime time to see deer and elk in this area because they’re on the move for migration and mating. You’re also likely to see more pheasants, turkeys, and other game birds for the same reasons. While the wildlife spotting is certainly fun, make sure you’re watching for wildlife on and near the roads. Especially around dawn and dusk when animals are active, you’ll need to be extra vigilant. Hitting an animal with your vehicle can not only damage your car or truck, but the impact could severely injure you and your passengers.
As always, make smart choices when you’re driving. When you’re behind the wheel, you’re responsible not only for your own safety, but also for other drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. Don’t text and drive. Drive sober and don’t let others drive drunk. Wear your seatbelt. Distracted and/or impaired driving is never okay. Stay safe for yourself and others
